University of New England hosts Ghana health leaders to celebrate new public health partnership

The University of New England will welcome several dignitaries from the Republic of Ghana, West Africa in November to raise awareness of and celebrate a new health partnership.  Events, free and open to the public, will be held at UNE’s Portland Campus Wednesday, November 10 through Friday, November 12, 2010.
UNE’s Center for Community and Public Health, the Ghana Health Service, the University of Cape Coast (of Ghana), and several U.S. based health organizations have launched the Ghana Health Partnership to improve the health of the population of western Ghana. 
“We will work with colleagues in the partnership to identify, plan and evaluate innovations designed to improve health services in Ghana,” said Dr. Ron Deprez, director of UNE’s Center for Community and Public Health (CCPH). CCPH conducts research, demonstration and planning studies throughout the U.S.

Town Council and Planning Board Workshop on Shoreland Zoning

The Town Council and Planning Board will be meeting together in a Workshop scheduled for Thursday, November 4, 2010 at the Town Hall Chamber at 7:00 p.m.

This is the normal Planning Board scheduled Workshop, the Planning Board requested the presence of the Town Council to discuss the important issue of Shoreland Zoning.  There will be an introductory presentation followed by indepth discussions.

The Veterans Memorial

The Veterans Memorial Committee is kicking off a fund raising campaign on Election Day, Tuesday, November 2, 2010 at the High School voting polls.  The money raised will be used to create gardens for each of the wars memorialized in the Park and add to the memorials; one for the Gulf War and one for the Afghanistan War.  Volunteers will be at the High School from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. to receive donations.  The Committee is asking for $1.00 from each citizens of Old Orchard Beach to honor all Veterans from the community.  Further information can be secured by calling 710-1644.

Maritime Mistakes the Focus of Sweetser Lecture

Saco/Sanford, ME, October, 2010 — Those interested in maritime history are invited to attend the final entry in the fall Sweetser Lecture Series on Thursday, November 4, at 7 p.m. at the Dyer Library, when Chester Hopkins, former Vice-President of Marine and Terminal Operations for French Lines, will present a personal narrative complemented with visual images, of commercial shipping's disasters at sea and in port in Fragile: Handle With Care - Maritime Mistakes.

Chet Hopkins grew up in Reading, Massachusetts, and is a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy.  He served at sea for 18 years with American Export Lines, working up to Master.  This was followed by ten years in Europe and fifteen years in the New York area working for German, Chinese, Korean and French steamship companies.  He retired  from the French Line in 2005.  Captain Hopkins continues to consult in the maritime industry in the U.S.
