Harriet Haley Hibbard
My Aunt Harriet Haley Hibbard: "Aunt Hat" proudly served in World War 2. A South Bristol girl, she responded to President Roosevelt's call for women with "A Star-Spangled Heart" to enlist to support our men at war. She was originally in the "Women's Auxillary Army Corps." On July 1, 1943, 18 months after Haley enlisted in the WAAC, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law legislation which changed the name of the corps to the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), granting women status as members, not auxiliary of, The United States Army. The WAC's were born, and lasted until 1978, when they were assimilated at last into one Army, with men and women granted equal benefits of service. We love and are proud of our " Aunt Hat" who lives in Portland now, in her own apartment.

Captain Ebba (Hanson) Loveridge
Captain Ebba (Hanson) Loveridge served as a Nurse in the Army Air Force in World War II. Ebba is now 93 years old and lives in Round Pond. During her service, she took care of POW's as they were brought to London from German POW camps. She served throughout the war, took a brief break and reenlisted, being sent to Germany during the Cold War. This Feisty Captain once had to put her own shoulder back in it's socket when a distressed patient attacked her. She snapped it back, while other patients watched, then restrained the attacker until she could get her proper help. Nurses like Ebba were often the faces that soldiers saw first after they woke from being wounded. She is a proud Veteran who gave her all for her fellow soldiers.
