Beach Cleanup Event

Beach Cleanup Event

Barefoot Wine and the Maine Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation are teaming up again this year on the Barefoot Beach Rescue Project.

Through this project 20 beaches around the country will be cleaned and celebrated this summer – in order to keep our beaches “Barefoot Friendly.” There is an event coming up in your area at the end of this month on 7/30 in Old Orchard Beach .

There will be a cleanup in the morning, followed by a complementary volunteer appreciation party for all participants at the Barefoot Bay (aptly named).

Disc Golfing: Family, friendly, fun!

Disc Golfing: Family, friendly, fun!

If you are looking for something to do outside this summer with your family, make sure you check out Pleasant Hill Disc Golf in Scarborough. "What is disc golf?", you ask? Disc golf is golf, but with discs! It's easy to learn and very affordable. They are independently owned and operated. Their 18-hole, 40 acre course, which is a former traditional ball golf course has plenty of wide opened throwing areas [perfect for those of use that may not have the best aim ;)], as well as some fun water hazards! They welcome all playing levels, from beginner to pro as well as dogs! Yes, that's right, you can bring your fur baby! But of course, only well-behaved, socialized, and non-aggressive dogs are allowed and you must pick up all poops. ;)

They are opened 7 days a week from 9:00AM to 8:00PM.

Have You Ever Been Kiteboarding?

Have You Ever Been Kiteboarding?

Today as I was doing some "work" AKA blogging from Pine Point Beach in Scarborough I thoroughly enjoyed watching a couple of the kiteboarders that were cruising up and down the beachy coast. They were flying! Literally, at times! I realized that kiteboarding [I was calling it wind surfing until a friend corrected me] was one of those extreme sports that I will most likely never try... I'd panic, let go and jump off the board before I started flying through the air, but not that guy! It was FUN to watch!

I did a little research and found MASSkiting, which is New England's premiere kiteboarding resource. It definitely is NOT a beginners sport, so make sure you do your research before you start kiteboarding up & down the Eastern seaboard! ;)

Community Bicycle Center receives $4,867 grant to fund "bike doctor" programs

Community Bicycle Center receives $4,867 grant to fund "bike doctor" programs

Biddeford, Maine- June 23nd, 2011- The Community Bicycle Center (CBC) recently received a $4,867 grant from the York County Fund of the Maine Community Foundation (MaineCF) to engage older youth in vocational activities through community outreach. The CBC empowers youth through bicycles and bicycling related experiences.

MaineCF funds will enable CBC to conduct free bike repair and maintenance for youth and families in their own neighborhoods through the use of a highly visible, self contained pedal-powered bike repair station and bike safety education unit. Older teens, including graduates of CBC’s formal bike mechanics program (Bike Monkeys) and youth completing community service, will help coordinate and execute outreach efforts.

A statewide organization with offices in Ellsworth and Portland, the Maine Community Foundation partners with donors and nonprofits to strengthen Maine communities.
