UNE Medical School Kicks Off White Coat

UNE COLLEGE OF OSTEOPATHIC MEDICINE CELEBRATES FIFTEENTH ANNUAL WHITE COAT CEREMONY

BIDDEFORD, MAINE — University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine Senior Vice President for Health Affairs and Dean Marc B. Hahn, D.O., welcomed 123 first-year medical students, together with 1,000 family members and friends, at the fifteenth annual White Coat Ceremony formally recognizing the transition students make from lay persons to those assuming the responsibility of physicians.

The evening ceremony was held at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland, Maine on Thursday, Oct. 6, 2011.  The White Coat Ceremony kicks off a full weekend of continuing medical education and alumni events at the College of Osteopathic Medicine.
 
This year's keynote speaker was Dr. Sheila Pinette, D.O., 2000 UNE College of Osteopathic Medicine graduate, and Director of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention in the Department of Human Services.

York County Senior College Members to Tour UNE

Saco/Sanford/Springvale, ME, October, 2011 — York County Seniors will have a unique educational experience when they tour the Marine Science Center at the University of New England on October 12.  The trip will feature a lecture, then a tour of the facilities, capped off by a visit to the George and Barbara Bush Library.

UNE's Marine Science Center takes advantage of its geographic proximity to the mouth of the Saco and the Atlantic Ocean to offer a home to the Marine Animal Rehabilitation Center (MARC) and a state-of-the-art marine research center that features both laboratory and field research.  MARC is authorized by the National Marine Fisheries Service to rescue and rehabilitate stranded marine mammals and sea turtles.

The George and Barbara Bush Center, home of the Bush Legacy Collection, is home to memorabilia related to the Bushes' New England heritage and their love for Maine, whose coast has, according to President Bush, been their "anchor to wind

Eat, Drink and be Merry to Support Ferry Beach Ecology School

Spend a Sunday afternoon in October enjoying the best of what Maine has to offer and support environmental education at Ferry Beach Ecology School in Saco. The 4th Annual Eco Appetito event will be hosted by Lee Skawinski, chef and owner of Cinque Terre Restaurant in Portland on Sunday, October 2nd from Noon – 3pm.

Eco Appetito is a celebration of locally grown and produced foods, beverages and desserts. Chef Lee Skawinski will create a scrumptious menu using food items donated by local vendors. Some of this year’s vendors include Bangs Island Mussels, Longfellow’s Creamery, Borealis Breads, Farmers’ Gate Market and Gelato Fiasco. Event attendees will be treated to delicious appetizers, fantastic silent auction items and entertainment from the staff of Ferry Beach Ecology School.

All proceeds from Eco Appetito benefit the Food for Thought program at Ferry Beach Ecology School.

Fall Robotics Workshop Schedule is Set

STATEWIDE: Maine Robotics has announced it's fall workshop schedule for teachers, parents and coaches who want to get started with the LEGO(r) MindStorms Kit or who are interested in participating in the FIRST(tm) LEGO(r) League here in Maine.

The workshops are being held in 5 communities around Maine, including Falmouth, Auburn, Farmington, Bangor, and Farmingdale.  Participants will spend the day building and learning to program the LEGO(r) robots to do simple and intermediate tasks.  No previous experience or equipment is needed, all equipment is provided by Maine Robotics.

Maine Robotics is Maine's premier provider of robotics and engineering afterschool programs and works with over 1300 students and teachers each year in developing a higher degree of STEM literacy.  We welcome you to come participate at these workshops and join the hundreds of schools and thousands of children in Maine that have become engaged in science, engineering and technology

FREE public opening preview: Wednesday, September 14, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Two concurrent exhibitions at the Saco Museum this fall will celebrate the art of drawing, presented in conjunction with The Maine Drawing Project (http://chitna.asap.um.maine.edu/mainedrawing/). Drawn from the River: Drawings by Artists of the Saco River Valley will use drawings from the Saco Museum's permanent collection to explore how drawing was part of the artistic process for 19th-century local artists like Gibeon Elden Bradbury and Charles Henry Granger.
