Turnpike seeks input on proposed 10-year plan

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- The Maine Turnpike Authority has developed a preliminary 10-year plan and is seeking the public's input on their proposal.  State law mandates that the quasi-governmental agency develop an operating plan each decade and allow residents and turnpike users to weigh-in on it before it is adopted.

"The last 10-year plan included about $600 million of work over a decade," stated Dan Morin, spokesman for the MTA.  "This plan is down to about $250 million that includes no toll increases within the 10-year plan."

Morin says the MTA will continue to rehabilitate and replace many bridges along the highway, as well as repave an average for 50 lane-miles a year over the next decade.

The plan also includes no layoffs.

"We are currently at our minimum level of operations for cash toll collectors," said Morin.

Biddeford's Dumoulin records first NHL point

PITTSBURGH (NEWS CENTER) - Two days after getting his first taste of NHL action, Biddeford native Brian Dumoulin got his first NHL point as his Pittsburgh Penguins beat Toronto 3-1.

The rookie defenseman's shot was redirected by former Portland Pirates forward Chris Conner's 39 seconds into Pittsburgh's game against Toronto.

The former Boston College standout logged more than 18 minutes of ice time finishing with a +2 plus/minus, a blocked shot, and two penalty minutes.

Rotarians provide holiday help for Lac Megantic

SACO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Members of local Rotary Clubs are working to make this Christmas just a little bit merrier for the people of Lac Megantic, Quebec.

Last summer the town was destroyed when a runaway train barreled into it and tankers carrying fuel exploded. 47 people died.

Tomorrow a caravan of cars and trucks will leave Saco and head across the border with gifts and money.

The project was the idea of Paul Deschambault, a member of the Biddeford-Saco Rotary Club, who saw the devastation firsthand when he visited there a few months ago. He started with a modest goal of raising $5000, but the actual amount brought it was more than $25000 after Rotary Clubs throughout the area jumped on board.

Teen saves choking mother

SACO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A family has a lot to be thankful for this holiday season, after a daughter performed life-saving first aid on her mother.

Tobee and Victoria Labbe were about to leave the house Thursday night when Tobee began choking on a piece of candy. Victoria remembered learning the Heimlich Maneuver in school last year and sprang into action. She successfully dislodged the piece of candy so her mother could breathe again.

"I didn't necessarily want to place my 13 year-old daughter in that position to do that," Tobee Labbe said. "But she stepped up and she did it."

This video demonstrates how to perform the Heimlich Maneuver if someone is choking and can't breathe.
