Rare 1865 baseball card auctioned in Biddeford for $80K

BIDDEFORD, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A man from Massachusetts man went home Wednesday with a very pricey piece of Americana.

A rare baseball card discovered at a yard sale in Washington County sold for eighty thousand dollars at auction in Biddeford.

Jason LeBlanc of Newburyport, MA purchased the card for his four year-old son, Alex.

"We have a son with challenges who is four years old, and this is an investment for my son Alex, and I think it's a good investment," LeBlanc said. "It's one of a kind, and one day somebody will call me on the phone and want to buy it for two or three times as much."

The baseball card is a photograph of the 1865 Brooklyn Atlantics that is believed to be one-of-a-kind. There is one that looks almost identical in the Library of Congress, but experts think the two photographs came from different negatives. Because the card is one-of-a-kind, the auction house had no idea how high the bids would go. While the final bid didn't get into the six figures they expected, it still broke the record for their highest sale.
