Maine teams split Legion Regional openers

NEWS CENTER-  The last time Maine won the Northeast Regional in Legion Baseball was 2004.  It marked only the second time in the events 52 year history that a team representing the state won the tournament.  On Thursday, the First Title of Maine, Portland's Legion squad comprised solely of players from Cheverus, took an impressive first step in clinching Maine and Portland's third crown. 

In their opener at Old Orchard Beach against Woonsocket of Rhode Island, the Portland Legion squad won by a 4-1 count.  Starter Mitchell Powers gave up just one run in eight innings of work, striking out seven.  They'll play Saratoga, New York, Friday afternoon at 4:30 PM.

Fayette Staples Post #57, a legion team from Saco, couldn't complete the sweep in the nightcap as they fall to Milford, Connecticut 5-2.  The squad consisiting of Thornton Academy players falll to the consolation bracket.
