Mary's Walk charity fundraiser | News
SACO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- An estimated 4,000 people spent their day in Saco at a cancer fundraiser called Mary's Walk.
It was the 16th anniversary of the event, which is one of Maine's largest charity races.
The event began in 1999 as a small group of friends and family of Mary Libby, a Saco resident who died from Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Since then, the walk has grown to involve the entire town of Saco.
The walk raised more than $290,000 dollars last year.
Organizers were anticipating a record number of participants for this year's race.
In the 16 years the race has occurred, Mary's Walk has raise more than 2 million dollars. The proceeds from Mary's Walk are used to support the grant funding programs administed by the Maine Cancer Foundation.
