Barefoot Wine and the Maine Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation are teaming up again this year on the Barefoot Beach Rescue Project.

 Through this project 20 beaches around the country will be cleaned and celebrated this summer – in order to keep our beaches “Barefoot Friendly.” There is an event coming up in your area at the end of this month on 7/30 in Old Orchard Beach .

 There will be a cleanup in the morning, followed by a complementary volunteer appreciation party for all participants at the Barefoot Bay (aptly named).

Annual 5k in Honor of Nicole Oliver Continues to Raise Awareness about Domestic Violence

4th ANNUAL NICOLE’S RUN/ WALK TO BENEFIT CARING UNLIMITED TO BE HELD IN KENNEBUNK!

The 4th Annual Nicole’s Run and Walk to benefit Caring Unlimited, York County’s Domestic Violence Program, will be held on Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Lord’s Point, Kennebunk Beach.  The 5k run and walk, presented in part by 2011 Event Sponsor: Kennebunk Savings Bank, will begin at 9:00am, with registration opening at 6:45am.  Registration fees are $20 in advance, $25 on race-day.

Nicole’s Run/ Walk was first organized by friends and family of Nicole Oliver, a 24-year old mother of two from Wells, Maine who was killed by her husband in 2007.  Nicole had recently left her abusive husband and was working to rebuild a safe and secure life for herself and her two young sons.  She was attending York County Community College, taking courses that would help her achieve her goal of becoming a registered nurse, when she was killed.  "If these walks raise awareness and ca

WinterKids appoints new Executive Director

WinterKids, the non-profit organization that helps children develop healthy lifelong habits through fun, outdoor winter activity, today announced the appointment of its new executive director, Julie D. Mulkern. Mulkern, who served as WinterKids' development director since September 2008, brings 12 years of professional non-profit experience to the organization, including resource development, program development, and staff and volunteer management in the public health sector.

"We are very pleased to welcome Julie to the executive director post," said Anna Fincke, president of the WinterKids board of directors. "Her creative vision, compassion and experience will shape and expand WinterKids in exciting ways, and guide our efforts to get more kids outside and active in winter.

This Saturday, June 18th, at 2:00PM the Maine Bikram Yoga Studio located off of Dartmouth Street in Portland will be starting their Community Donation class. For a minumum CASH donation of $5 you will be able to take an amazing 90 minute full body workout and the best part? All of the monies collected from tomorrow [June 18th] thru July 31st will be donated to the Center For Grieving Children. This donation class will ONLY be on Saturday's at 2:00PM!

If you aren't sure what Bikram yoga is, let me give you a brief run down... Bikram Yoga is a system of yoga that Bikram Choudhury synthesized from traditional yoga techniques and popularized beginning in the early 1970s. The classes run exactly 90 minutes and consist of a set series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises.

We are finding out from schools and churches here in Old Orchard Beach, the families that are in dying need of help, families with children, animals etc… Starting Sunday, June 5th, 2011 @10:00 a.m. and every Sunday after in the Milliken St. parking lot! We are going to be showing up at these special families’ homes to surprise them with lots of volunteers including: Builders, contractors, roofers, plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, material and furniture suppliers as well as citizens that want to join in on this new adventure along with a police/fire escort! We also will fill the family’s fridge up with food and taking the children shopping at the mall to get them nice clothes to fit in at school, to build their self-esteem in hopes their grades will improve if need be and help build growth within themselves.

Healthy Habits Youth Triathlon Series Kicks off on Sunday
Biddeford, ME (May 20, 2011) – On Sunday, May 22, 2011, the Healthy Habits Youth
Triathlon Series 2011 season will officially get underway at the Northern York County Family
YMCA. The race will consist of an indoor pool swim, and outdoor bike and run.
Sunday’s race will get underway at 9 a.m. Media are encouraged to attend.
The Healthy Habits Youth Triathlon Series is all about kids. Now in its second year, it is a fun way
to introduce the sport of triathlon to children in Maine. The goal is to teach children that exercise is
crucial for good health. Eating right, drinking plenty of water, and getting enough exercise are
Healthy Habits that organizers for the initiative hope to instill in the children participating in this
raceseries. The events are open to all children ages 5-15.
The series is comprised of three races.
