Chicken Health - Check your flock!

Chicken Health - Check your flock!

It is so important to check on your flock every day.  Usually you can do this when checking for eggs in a layer flock.  As you approach the coop make a quick visual inspection of your flock.  Are they curious about you?  Are they checking you out looking for treats?  Are they bright eyed?  It is pretty easy to spot a bird that is not doing so well health wise.  A bird that is sick may look droopy or uninterested.  It may not eat any snacks you throw down.  It may look the wrong shape, ie head pulled against it's body rather than alert and tall.  It may move very slow or not run away from you.  All these signs indicate a sick bird and it is imperative to SEPARATE the bird as quickly as possible so disease does not spread.  Get a medium sized box and put some litter in the bottom then put the bird in.   Put a small tray of water in there as well.
