The Queen Reclaims her Throne at Scarborough Downs

Shady Sabrina, also known as The Queen reclaimed her Throne at Scarborough Downs Saturday.

Shady Sabrina is a track record holder who returned to the Winner’s Circle on Saturday (4/30), claiming victory in the Fillies and Mares’ Free-for-All. This is Shady Sabrina's first win after an eight-month absence from the races due to a flexor tendon injury.  The “Queen" clock timed in 1:56, with driver/trainer Kevin Switzer calling the shots.

“It’s hard to bring a horse of that caliber back after that type of an injury,” said Switzer, “especially to compete at the highest level in only her second start back. I couldn’t be prouder. She was just waiting for her chance to race today, and when she cleared from the pocket, the outcome was never in doubt.

VOYAGES AND THE GREAT AGE OF SAIL

VOYAGES AND THE GREAT AGE OF SAIL

May 7 through September 4, 2011

The University of New England and the Saco Museum have teamed up this summer to create an exhibition on the great age of sail in Maine. Dr. Elizabeth A. De Wolfe, Professor of History at the University of New England, and Camille Smalley, Program and Education Manager for the Saco Museum, have team taught an exhibition class titled "Voyages and the Great Age of Sail." The resulting exhibition of the same name, curated by students in the class, will be on view at the Saco Museum May 7 through September 4, 2011. Voyages features a treasure trove of artifacts related to the Saco sea captain Tristram Jordan —paintings, decorative arts, navigational tools, and more—in order to explore nineteenth-century maritime history.

Maine State Parks Begin to Open

Maine state parks and historic sites are starting to open up for the season. Officials with the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands (BPL), under the Maine Department of Conservation, want to update visitors on several park situations around the state.
