Maine Cancer Foundation Announces New Gold Partner for 13th Annual Mary’s Walk Fundraiser

Registration forms and online registration are now available for the March 13
Mary’s Walk which is held in conjunction with the Kerrymen Pub 5K.

Saco, Maine (Feb. 15, 2011) - On Sunday, March 13, nearly 4,000 walkers and runners will converge on Saco to celebrate the 13th annual Mary’s Walk and Kerrymen Pub 5K. These hardy souls from southern Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts will arrive to honor the memory of lives lost to cancer and to encourage and support those who are currently coping with the disease.

This year, the Mary’s Walk committee is pleased to acknowledge Town & Country Federal Credit Union’s Gold Partnership.  Town & Country’s Saco branch office is along the route where Mary Kerry Libby used to walk while trying to recover from her courageous battle with cancer. For several years, office employees and volunteers have handed out water bottles to walkers and runners, and they’re excited to participate once again in the day’s festivities.  In 2010, Town & Country also rallied a team of 22 walkers and runners who raised $7,800 for Maine Cancer Foundation.

“We have a goal this year of raising $10,000, and our team will include 35 Town & Country employees who will walk or run in support of one of our own, John T., who continues battling lung cancer,” said Linda Halleran, marketing manager at Town & Country.

Halleran acknowledged that her fellow employees resoundingly support John in his fight against cancer, and have pledged to increase their fundraising goal while raising spirits in the cancer community.  John has graciously offered to do whatever it takes.  To that end, he plans to participate in this year’s Mary’s Walk, alongside other courageous folks who share his desire to find a cure.  “If it’ll help a bunch of people, John’s ok with that,” Linda said.

“We’re so fortunate to have Town & Country join us as a sponsor this year. Their Saco branch has maintained a welcome presence along the route for several years,” noted Gene Libby, the current president of Maine Cancer Foundation’s Board of Directors.  “They’re active in the greater Saco community and generous with their volunteers and money raised during Mary’s Walk.  The Foundation is very grateful for their community spirit and the donations offered in support of cancer research, education and patient support.”

Mary’s Walk was founded in 1999 as a unique way to recognize Mary Kerry Libby’s spirit and the joie de vivre she warmly shared with friends, family and the community of Saco. What first began as a 427 person stroll through town has evolved into a major community happening that has attracted an estimated 20,000 or more participants during its twelve year span.  In 2010, Mary’s Walk raised $226,000 for the Maine Cancer Foundation, bringing the total amount of funds raised since its inception to over $1.4 million.  This year’s goal is $250,000 so bring your friends and family or organize a company team to walk or run as a group. Anyone touched by cancer will appreciate being part of this inspirational day.

As in past years, the Walk will be held in conjunction with the Kerrymen Pub 5K, a recognized part of the road race circuit.  The race begins at noon, and the 2.5 mile walk will begin at 12:15 at the Thornton Academy gym, 436 Main Street, Saco. The first 1,500 pre-registered walkers and the first 1,200 pre-registered runners will receive free t-shirts. Pre-registration ends March 4, 2011.   For information regarding Mary’s Walk and the Kerrymen Pub 5K, including registration forms and online pre-registration, log on to, or in Maine, please call 1-866-627-2411.
