Business, Events, Schools

SACO—On Monday, Dec. 13, thanks to a donation from Prime Motor Group President Ira Rosenberg, award-winning fantasy author Julie Hahnke will spend the day working with students at Thornton Academy.

Schedule of events
Hahnke will teach writing workshops to sixth-grade classes at Thornton Academy Middle School (TAMS) in the morning. Afterward, a luncheon will be held and students can share special projects they’ve developed based on Hahnke’s story, and finally the author will talk to TA middle and high school students in the auditorium.  The sixth grade classes at TAMS have just finished reading Hahnke’s latest book, The Grey Ghost, a blend of fantasy and historic fiction set in medieval Scotland. It won the Mom’s Choice Award Silver Medal in 2010, and bookstores across the country voted it #3 on the Kids’ Summer 2009 Indie Next List.

Hahnke’s assembly presentation will examine the research in different subjects that goes into her stories and how it contributes to the elements of fiction. She’ll also announce an exciting national literacy campaign being launched next month and her collaboration with an Atlanta-based teen rock group. She’ll have custom-designed, autographed bookmarks for every student, and bagpipes and a large sword may make an appearance.

Support for program
A classroom set of 30 books for TAMS and Hahnke’s author visit on Dec. 13 are both made possible by a generous donation from Ira Rosenberg, President of Prime Motor Group in Saco.
