Tree stumps in Kennbunk sand draw concern

KENNEBUNK, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- Some tree stumps popping out from beneath the sand at Gooch's Beach in Kennebunk are getting a lot of attention.

The stumps are revealed every few years after a bad winter. But this year, a large stump also washed in from out of town. Soon, social media was full of rumors that the town was digging up the stumps, and that they were 3,000 years old.

Town Manager Barry Tibbetts said that's just not so. "Everybody thought we dug it up. We didn't dig it up. It just appeared after a storm one day. So it floats in and out and eventually, it'll float to some other community, and we're glad to send it to them."

Tibbetts said not only has there been no study done on the age of the stumps, the town has no plans to dig them up either. Some of the stumps' rough roots will be trimmed, however, because they could hurt children playing in the waves.

3rd man arrested for illicit behavior in Saco

SACO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) - Police have made another arrest for illicit behavior in Saco.

Police arrested two men last week. One was caught naked in the Cascade Falls Park,  and police say the second one propositioned an undercover officer.

Monday's incident didn't happen at the park, but across town at the commuter parking lot on Industrial Park Road.

Police say an undercover officer was approached by Roy Fortin, who apparently exposed himself to the officer.

Fortin was arrested and charged with indecent conduct.

He's being held in lieu of $100 bail at the York County Jail and is due in court in late July.

Does Sunscreen Prevent Malignant Melanoma?

Does Sunscreen Prevent Malignant Melanoma?

This past Monday was Melanoma Monday — an awareness campaign developed by the American Academy of Dermatology — so I decided to update a post I wrote last year about protecting your skin from the sun. I also checked in with Mike Cushman, who was diagnosed with malignant melanoma in 2010. At the end of the post, you’ll find a list of upcoming free skin cancer screenings in Southern Maine. Read more.
