Bombing victim looking to return home to Maine to heal

BOSTON, Massachusetts NEWS CENTER) -- Karen Rand was standing among a crowd of friends and strangers when her life changed forever in an instant.

"When it happened, you don't know what happened," she recalled. "You can't imagine what happened."

Like most people who live in Massachusetts, Rand loved the fun and energy that surrounds Marathon Monday.

"The whole day, it is just a big, fun day, starting in the morning all the way through the day," she explained. "It is just a big, fun event."

Making his way from Hopkinton to Boston was her boyfriend, Kevin McWatters who was running in his 11th Boston Marathon.

Habibi - a graphic novel

Habibi - a graphic novel

If they are this marvelous, I could get hooked on graphic novels.

Habibi is the first "serious" graphic novel I've ever read. It took Craig Thompson seven years to research it, learn to read and write Arabic, and then to develop and illustrate both the plot and all the magnificent art in this book. Habibi is a fairy tale, incorporating the fantasy of the 1,001 Nights, the mystery of The Prophet's mystical experiences. But it also follows the struggles of two children - survivors. It is a parable of the evils we are committing upon the world, causing destruction through our own selfish foolishness. It is a story of cruelty and abuse, especially sexual abuse, and also about the redemptive power of love.

Pigs rooting in the earth!

Pigs rooting in the earth!

One of the neatest things to see is when pigs really get their snouts down deep into the dirt and root around for food.  They're looking for roots, grubs, bugs, anything they can find.  They really are like little plows!  In fact people have known for a long time that the best way to prepare land for a garden is to let pigs trample around in it first!

Man found dead following standoff in Saco

SACO, Maine (NEWS CENTER) -- A standoff that last more than four hours Saturday came to an end when police said the suspect set fire to his home and died inside.

Authorities identified the man as 58-year-old Charles Scontras. The State Fire Marshal's Office said it found his body in the rubble of his home late Saturday night.

The standoff began just before 2 p.m. Saturday at Scontras's home on Hillview Avenue when Scontras's wife called police to escort her to retrieve some of her belongings at the home.

When police arrived on scene with Scontras's wife, they noticed smoke coming from the building and they called the fire department.

Police said at least one shot was then fired by Scontras inside the home.  The state police tactical team was called in to assist, and police set up a perimeter around the home.

Ken Capron is an intelligent man. I got that right away when we met recently. His gaze was strong and focused and he was quick and articulate when he answered my questions. I only knew he had dementia because he told me ahead of time. I had the same experience with Donna Beveridge. Since her diagnosis, she’s even become an accomplished artist and is chronicling her life with dementia in watercolor.

Movies: "Star Trek Into Darkness"

The new “Star Trek” reunites the young crew that producer/director J.J. Abrams put together for his 2009 sequel to the long-running TV and movie series, and he’s thrown in some heavyweight supporting actors and a ton of special effects as well.

The only thing he left out was the moral questioning of the original series, its real heart and soul.
